It wasn't pretty, but the U.S. Women's National Team made it through the group stage at the 2023 World Cup to reach the knockout round, where the two-time defending champions will face longtime nemesis Sweden on Sunday in Melbourne.
The United States hopes the knockout rounds represent a fresh start after failing to win its group for just the second time at a World Cup (2011 was the other).
This will be the sixth consecutive World Cup that the U.S. and Sweden have met, but the first time in the knockout stage. Perhaps weighing on the Americans' minds is an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Sweden two years ago at the Tokyo Olympics.
The team, which features veterans Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Crystal Dunn trying to mesh with rising stars Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Alyssa Thompson, knows it has work to do to continue its greatness. Perhaps some lineup changes may even be in order for this win-or-go-home match.
